In today’s modern football, footballers are more valuable than ever. Most of the players in the top tiers Leagues being paid millions of pounds monthly and on the top of this list are players like Leo Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. The Most Wanted

In this case, it is about demand and supply and like any other business if there is demand you have to provide the supply. Meaning that amount it’s equal to the numbers of top players who are talented enough to play in the top leagues such as Premier League and La Liga. On the other side is the demand and in this case, are the teams who are competing to buy those top players.

For example, in the Premier League, the teams who can compete for the best players and afford to pay huge salaries are the one in top 6. The likes of Manchester United, Liverpool, Manchester City, Chelsea, and Arsenal so that’s why smaller teams can’t afford to sign top players because they cannot beat the offer the big teams are putting on the table.

Why Messi and Ronaldo Are Paid So Well?

The answer is that there aren’t many talents like those two players. Players from that calibre are scarce and finding them it’s challenging, so that’s why the demand for them it’s enormous. Therefore, the biggest teams in football will do everything to sign them, including offering them sky-high salaries.

It is beneficial for both parties meaning that buying top players lead to increasing the chances of winning more trophies. Therefore if you are a successful team, you will receive more money from television rights, merchandise, and ticket sales.

On the other hand, it’s lower leagues where the wages are not so big, and the reason for that is that there is a higher supply of footballers — leading to less demand for those players because they won’t be able to bring significant revenues for the club.

Increasing Wages. The Reason Behind That

Football clubs make more money than ever. Therefore, they can afford to pay big wages and rising them with every sign new contract. Nowadays clubs have many sources of cash such as TV market, sponsorship and ticket sales which makes football more popular and profitable. For example, is the price for the first season of Premier League in 1992-97 when the rights for broadcasting the matches were sold for less than £200 million in comparison with 2015-19 broadcasting rights which were sold for £5.3 billion.

Is there any chance of wages to go down? There is a chance, but it is doubtful to happen, and ill tell you why. Let’s say that people are not any longer interested in watching football which will lead to less profit for clubs. Therefore the demand for players will drop and their wages as well. But as I said it’s doubtful because football its getting more and more popular.

With A Touch Of Unfairness

Is it fair for football players to be paid so much? I would say no. No athlete performs such a vital function so vital as to get to charge those staggering amounts of money. If we parallel their salaries with other professions in a society where their importance is much more significant and vital such as doctors who save lives every day, professors, firefighters and many more essential jobs. We can conclude that some footballers can equal their annual wages for one day or even hours. So you tell me, is that fair?

  1. Such an interesting article. Football is my favorite sport. But for me, footballers deserved the pay because they offer great spectacles to millions of people who are willing to pay for that entertainment. The clubs are making a lot of money, so they also have to encourage the ones who are making this possible. So it’s a win-win situation on each side.

    1. I partially agree with you, but in particular cases, footballers get far too much, and the example is Alexi Sanches who was receiving £500,000 a week which is ridiculous for the performance he shows at Manchester United.

  2. Hello Charles. Thank you for your feedback. I do appreciate the information you are sharing with me and i will take a look of it. Thank you a lot.
